ime Trials, Points Races and Sprints Featured on Day Three of
USA Cycling Master Track Nationals

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Aug. 11, 2006) – Two world records were broken and 14 national titles were decided on day three of the USA Cycling Master Track National Championships at the 7-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Both world records were set in the morning’s 2000-meter time trial event. Woody Cox (Redmond, Wash./Byrne Specialty Gas) set a national and world record in the men’s 55-59 category with his time of 2 minutes and 24.439 seconds. Marsha Macro (Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing) bested her own world record in the women’s 60+ category with her 2000-meter time of 2:43.982.

Also winning national titles in the 2000-meter time trial were Charlotte Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gulf Coast) in the women’s 50-54 category, Louella Holter (Flagstaff, Ariz./Greggs-Specialized) in the women’s 55-59 age group, James Murdock (Loveland, Colo./Hammer Racing) in the men’s 60-64 category, Charlie Watson (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Southbay Wheelmen) in the men’s 65-69 category and Richard Simons (Oak Park, Ill./Midwest Masters) in the men’s 70+ category.

National titles and stars-and-stripes jerseys were also awarded Friday in the sprint and points races.

Friday’s sprint competition featured the youngest master categories with several races going to three rides in the best-of-three format for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. The day’s closest race was the men’s 30-34 gold-medal sprint in which Brant Hendler (Grand Rapids, Mich./West MI Coast Riders) claimed his first master track title, edging out Jason Garner (Glenview, Ill./Garner-Northbrook) at the line.

Hendler began track cycling nearly nine years ago as cross training for downhill mountain biking. When he turned 30 this year, however, he thought he’d try those skills at the master track national championships.

“I trained for the kilo and bombed that,” Hendler said. “Then I turned my sights to the points race and got third so the sprint was all I had left. I was determined to leave here with a jersey – one way or another I was going to leave here with a jersey.”

The men’s 35-39 gold-medal final also went to three rounds with James Tainter (Minneapolis, Minn./Loon State Cyclists) beating Thursday’s points race winner Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash./First Rate Mortgage) in the homestretch.

The women’s sprint titles were all decided in two rides with Brooke Wilson (Madison, N.J./Somerset Wheelmen) winning the women’s 30-34 category and Julie Bautista (San Diego, Calif./Ranchos Cycling) winning the 35-39 category.

Placing fifth in the consolation rounds of the sprints to secure the final podium spots were Joseph LaCour (Mansfield, Texas/Colavita) in the men’s 30-34 category, Mark Legg (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike) in the men’s 35-39 category, Pazit Rose (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hammer Racing) in the women’s 30-34 category and Stephanie Hsieh (Pasadena, Calif./Southbay Wheelmen) in the women’s 35-39 category.

In the points race competition, the most dominating performance of the day came in the women’s 40-44 category in which Annette Hanson (Kenmore, Wash./First Rate Mortgage) won four of six sprints in the 10-kilometer contest for 24 points.

“I was a little surprised the women weren’t a little more active and fighting me a little more, but it worked out okay for me,” Hanson said. “I knew I had it.”

Kent Bostick (Knoxville, Tenn./AMD Masters) virtually mirrored Hanson’s powerful performance in the men’s 50-54, 20-kilometer contest by winning five of 12 sprints and finishing second in five others for 40 points.

Tracey Huber (Louisville, Ky./Texas Roadhouse) won the women’s 45-49 points race that was run concurrently with the women’s 40-44 race.

Official results from the men’s 40-44 and 45-49 points races will be finalized and posted Saturday.

The 2006 USA Cycling Master Track National Championships continue through Sunday.
