Master track nationals conclude

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Aug. 13, 2006) – Four more national records fell on the final day of the USA Cycling Master Track National Championships at the 7-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs, Colo. Sunday concluded the five-day event with 66 national titles awarded to USA Cycling members age 30 and up.
All new national records were decided in the afternoon’s team time-trial events. The Byrne Specialty Gasses 3000-meter time trial team of Annette Hanson (Kenmore, Wash./First Rate Mortgage), Tracey Huber (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Flyers), Kele Murdin (Kenmore, Wash./Velo Bella-Kona) and Debbie Preller (Kirkland, Wash./Byrne Specialty Gasses) set a national record in the women’s 30+ category with its time of 3 minutes and 51.772 seconds.
In the men’s 4000-meter team time trial, the Discovery team of Kent Bostick (Knoxville, Tenn./AMD Masters), Jeffrey Fillerup (Belmont, Calif./Webcor-Alto Velo), Larry Nolan (Fremont, Calif./Discovery Channel Masters) and Richard Meeker (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Discovery Channel Masters) set a national record in the men’s 40+ category with its time of 4:36.895. Also setting a team time-trial record was the Byrne Specialty Gasses team of Woody Cox (Redmond, Wash.), Lionel Space (Tucson, Ariz.), Jim Dickerson (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif.) in the men’s 50+ category with a time of 4:51.491 and the Texas Roadhouse team of Dan Vogt (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Sonance-Specialized), Curtis Tolson (Louisville, Ky./Texas Roadhouse), Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash./First Rate Mortgage) and Leif Clarke (Seattle, Wash./Benaroya Research) in the men’s 30+ category with a time of 4:31.463.
In all, eight master and one elite national title were awarded Sunday.
In the men’s 100-134 team sprint event, the Majaeric TS team of Eric Degolier (Waterloo, Wis./I.S.Corp Cycling), James Tainter (Minneapolis, Minn./Loon State Cyclists) and Matt Diefenbach (Pottstown, Pa./Majaeric) completed the three-lap distance in 1:05.820 for first place. In the men’s 135+ team sprint, the Hammer team of Mark Pelletier (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hammer Racing), Rich Voss (Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing) and Wil Zegers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won with its time of 1:05.360.
In the women’s 70+ team sprint event, two riders rode for two laps. The Hard Time team of Christi Chenowth (Dallas, Texas/Hard Time) and Hanson won the event in 49.403 seconds.
The afternoon was brought to a screeching halt by rains that interrupted the men’s 30+ madison event three times, delaying it for more than two hours. After the third stoppage, the race was called with 57 of the original120 laps left due to weather. The Texas Roadhouse team of Tolson and Williams, who led throughout the completed 63 laps and had gained a lap on the field, was awarded the national title.
The day concluded with the elite tandem sprint contest. The Excel tandem team of Dave Lindsey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Excel Sports) and Matt Benassi (Colorado Springs, Colo./Excel Sports) edged out the Indy Delta team of Matt Stolle (Indianapolis, Ind./Indiana Hand Center) and Virgil Whitmyer (Indianapolis, Ind./Indiana Hand Center) in the gold-medal final.
